Conversion of existing student common room area to provide a new Student Services office; catering education facilities; refurbished male and female changing areas; and other minor adjustments.
This Design & Build project had a tight programme, with the newly partitioned Student Services office being required by the end of August 2019 and the new teaching kitchen needed for the September catering courses to commence. Upgraded drainage was required to allow the conversion, with new internal pipe runs through the existing ground floor slab to take the waste water from the new kitchen stations. A 60-minute fire rated partition was constructed between the new teaching kitchen and relocated Student Services office.
Further partitions to form meeting rooms and offices together with new lighting and ceilings, flooring and redecoration were all completed within the Student Services area by the end of August.
Re-modelling of existing entrance, office and reception area to provide to provide a reconfigured student reception, new restaurant and bar served by a full commercial grade production kitchen This project commenced in January and was on target for a 19 week programme when the country locked down with Covid 19.
The site was shut for 8 weeks and when it re-opened, restrictions were placed on the number contractor allowed on site at any time. There were also issues with obtaining supplies due to production shutting down and distributors closing their centres. However, Rigg were pleased to be able to finish within a revised 24 week programme and hand over by the end of August, in time for the college to set up for the new academic year.
